Personal Workers’ Compensation for Domestic Staff

With the help of domestic employees – nannies or au pairs, live-in housekeepers, caregivers, and others – you run a tight household. At the same time, this also leaves you exposed should one of your domestic employees have a work-related injury or illness. That’s where Personal Workers’ Compensation steps in.

Make Sure You’re In Compliance, Covered

Some states, like New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, mandate you purchase Personal Workers’ Compensation for domestic employees who work a certain number of hours.  For example, in New York, any domestic worker employed (other than those employed on a farm) by the same employer for a minimum of 40 hours per week must have Workers’ Comp insurance. New Jersey stipulates that all household employers obtain coverage for any part-time or full-time domestic employee. And, Connecticut mandates that any domestic worker employed 26 hours or more per week by one employer must be insured under Workers’ Comp insurance. The policy will help pay medical bills, lost income and with getting back to work. Check with us regarding the requirements for your state.

In addition, sometimes coverage for part-time employees is automatically included within homeowners and renters policies. We can review this with you in more detail.
